May is National Mental Health Awareness month! There is so much stigma that surrounds mental health and so many myths that we need to squash, it really forces many to feel like the fight against mental illness is lost.
There is hope! My theory is that it is going to take time, but we, as a community can do it! EDUCATE, EDUCATE, EDUCATE! Let's start simple... mental illness vs. mental health!
When you're healthy - your body is cooperating, there is no disease, sickness, and you feel good! When you're ill - your body may not be fully cooperating, your mind may be racing, you may feel anxious, worried, sad, nervous, unable to maintain clear thoughts, and overall, there is some affect on your ongoing daily functioning, that may be causing you to act out of character or simply not "feel like yourself." With that said, how do you know when you're mentally healthy? Our mental health is key to our daily functioning, and our overall well-being. When this is compromised, there can potentially be some serious issues, if left untreated that you may begin to experience.
Contact a local mental health agency or your physician if you feel like you may need a professional to speak with regarding symptoms that you may be experiencing. Remember, there is NO health without mental health! Go and support an event in your community this week!
